Yet most agencies give little thought as to which one to use. Here’s what insurance agencies should know about five of the most popular web browsers.

There are dozens of browsers available. Vivaldi, Opera, Tor, DuckDuckGo, and others have their advocates. This article bluntly describes how the five browsers that most insurance agencies use handle privacy. These browsers are Chrome (Google), Brave, Firefox (Mozilla), Safari (Apple), and Edge (Microsoft). Below the comparison is a discussion of privacy-friendly browser extensions that insurance agencies should know about.
Chrome: Highly Capable, The Least Private
Chrome holds roughly 70% of the global browser market. It is fast, deeply integrated with Google’s tools, and genuinely excellent at what it does. It is also built by an advertising company. Most of Google’s revenue — nearly $295 billion in advertising in 2025, per Alphabet’s annual report — comes from advertising, and Chrome is designed to learn as much about you as it can. That shapes its defaults. For example, Chrome Sync is on by default and uploads your browsing history, open tabs, and saved passwords to Google’s servers, where it informs the company’s advertising system.
Chrome does not read the text of the pages you visit, but it observes your behavior in ways that build a profile. Brave: Familiar Interface. Strong Privacy by Default
Brave is built on Chromium, the same open-source engine as Chrome. The browser is designed to look and feel like Chrome, even running the same extensions. If you know Chrome, you already know Brave. The difference is that Brave is designed to protect your privacy. It’s the pro-privacy mirror version of Chrome.
Out of the box, Brave blocks ads, third-party trackers, and third-party cookies by default, with nothing to install or configure. Because that blocking is built into the browser rather than added as an extension, it was untouched by the Manifest V3 changes that crippled ad blocking on Chrome. Brave resists fingerprinting more aggressively than any other browser here, and it added containers in July 2026, letting you keep carrier portal sessions isolated from other browsing. Syncing your browser data like bookmarks, history, and passwords is optional and end-to-end encrypted. Brave has no access to the data.
Brave does run its own advertising program, but it works nothing like Google’s. It is off unless you turn it on, the ads are matched on your device rather than by profiling you on a server, and your browsing history never leaves your computer. You can ignore it entirely and lose none of Brave’s protection.
The bottom line on Brave: The strongest privacy of the five with no configuration required. The easiest switch for an agency coming from Chrome, and a strong choice for one that wants real protection without managing settings.
Firefox: Independent, Configurable, Well Protected
Firefox is the only major browser not built on Google’s Chromium or Apple’s WebKit. It runs on Mozilla’s own Gecko engine, making it the sole cross-platform alternative to the Chromium-based browsers that now account for roughly 83% of browser activity worldwide. That independence is its defining feature: Firefox answers to no ad platform, and its code is open-source, meaning anyone can audit what it actually does.
This also means its navigation, look, and feel is more distinct than the browsers built on Chromium. Whether Firefox’s different user interface is better or worse than those browsers built on Chromium is a personal preference.
By default, Firefox blocks third-party cookies and known trackers through its Enhanced Tracking Protection system. Switch that setting to Strict, and it reaches privacy on par with Brave. That is the practical trade-off between the two: Brave protects you the moment you install it, while Firefox gives you more control and rewards a few minutes of setup. Its extension library is deep, and the full version of uBlock Origin, the most effective ad and tracker blocker available, runs on Firefox without restriction. Brave also supports it, but Chrome and Edge no longer do.
Firefox enables you to sync your browser data (bookmarks, history, passwords, etc.) among your devices. Firefox Sync is optional, and when enabled, the data is end-to-end encrypted. This means even Mozilla cannot read it. It has long supported containers, which allow you to isolate activities in one set of tabs from sharing data with other sets of tabs.
The bottom line on Firefox: Strong privacy built on an independent engine with the deepest configurability of the five. The right choice for an agency willing to adjust a setting or two to maximize privacy who prefers a different user experience than Chromium-based browsers.
Safari: Strong Privacy in the Apple World
Safari comes pre-installed on every Mac, iPhone, and iPad, so for agencies working in the Apple ecosystem it is the path of least resistance. It is also one of the more privacy-protective mainstream browsers.
Apple’s business is hardware and services, not advertising, so it lacks Google’s incentive to watch what you browse. Safari has blocked third-party cookies by default for years, and its Intelligent Tracking Prevention system aggressively limits cross-site tracking and has added fingerprinting protections over time. When it comes to syncing browser data among your devices, Safari’s tool, iCloud Sync is optional, and Apple encrypts the data in transit and at rest, consistent with a business model that does not depend on knowing what you browse.
The limit for insurance agencies is practical: Safari is Apple-only. It does not run on Windows, so an agency with a mix of Mac and Windows machines cannot standardize on it. Its extension library is also smaller than Chrome’s or Firefox’s.
The bottom line on Safari: Strong privacy defaults and tracking protection from a company that does not depend on knowing what you browse. The natural choice for a Mac-only agency.
Edge: Better Than Chrome, But Not by Much
Microsoft Edge is built on Chromium and comes pre-installed on Windows, which gives it a large default audience. Microsoft’s main business is enterprise software, not advertising, which is a modestly different position than Chrome’s, but Edge still wants to know what you’re doing online.
To be fair, at its Strict tracking setting, Edge meaningfully blocks third-party cookies and known trackers. But those protections are not the default. Microsoft has also woven its Copilot AI throughout the browser which creates additional exposure for your insurance agency data. And Edge sends significant usage data back to Microsoft. Like Chrome, it no longer supports the full version of uBlock Origin. And, like Chrome, Edge Sync, which shares browser data among your devices, is on by default. It sends your browsing bookmarks, history and passwords to Microsoft, which uses it across its services including personalized advertising.
The bottom line on Edge: Better than Chrome if you change the settings, but that’s faint praise. Edge still reports back to Microsoft on your activity. It doesn’t support the strongest version of the uBlock privacy extension. It’s not in the same privacy-friendly class as Brave, Firefox, or Safari, but it is convenient if your insurance agency office is deeply embedded in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Privacy-Friendly Extensions Your Insurance Agency Should Consider
Whichever browser an agency chooses, a few extensions are worth understanding. Availability varies by browser after the Manifest V3 changes.
uBlock Origin is a wide-spectrum content blocker that filters ads, trackers, and malicious domains. It is the most widely recommended tool of its type, and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has cited ad blockers as a defense against malvertising. The full version runs on Firefox and Brave. A reduced version, uBlock Origin Lite, runs on Chrome and Edge but blocks less.
Privacy Badger, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, learns to block trackers based on their behavior rather than relying on lists alone. It runs on all five browsers here. A useful complement to uBlock Origin, or a simpler standalone option.
Containers (Firefox and Brave only) are not exactly an extension but belong here. They isolate browsing sessions, for example carrier portals in one container and everything else in another, so sites cannot share tracking data across them.
