When considering any technology purchase for your insurance agency, four questions can help you make the right selection. They address:

  • choice — do you need the technology;
  • cost — can you afford it;
  • confidence — can you trust it; and
  • comfort — will you use it.

For more on these factors, please see the NextAgency Resource article How to Choose Insurance Agency Technology.

Choice: Do we need the technology?

  • Do I need this technology to achieve my goals?
  • Do I need this technology to more quickly and efficiently achieve my goals?
  • Do my clients need this technology to achieve their goals?

Cost: Can we afford the technology?

  • Can my clients and I afford to buy the technology?
  • Can we afford to use the technology?
  • Can we afford to stop using it?

Confidence: Can we trust the technology?

  • Will the technology perform as promised?
  • Will my and my clients’ data be protected?
  • Will I be hiring a competitor?

Comfort: Will we use the technology?

  • Where am I on the technology adoption curve for this technology? (See below)
  • What have others experienced using this technology?
  • What do I have to change to use this technology?

The Adoption Curve

Adapted from “Crossing the Chasm” by Geoffrey A. Moore

  • Innovators: Pursue technology aggressively and early
  • Early Adopters: Embrace the promise and the risk of technology
  • Early Majority: Value technology’s promise, but proof it performs
  • Late Majority: Obtain technology only when it’s established and proven
  • Laggards: “We don’t need no stinking tech”
